Bern, the capital of Switzerland

Bern is the capital city of the Swiss Confederation and the fourth most populous city in Switzerland. Bern is surrounded on three sides by the river Aare, and is located just west of the centre of Switzerland and north of the Bernese Alps. The magnificent countryside around Bern was formed by glaciers during the Ice Age. The historic old town of Bern, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Old Town will delight you with its covered arcades, cobbled streets and decorated façades. Discover the local wonders such as the Das Berner Münster (Cathedral of Bern), the Zeitglockenturm (Clock Tower) and the Federal Palace. The Clock Tower is one of Bern’s most important sights.

Enjoy the view across the city and the snow-capped Bernese mountains when you are at the top of the Cathedral’s tower, Switzerland’s highest church tower! The Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Federal Palace, also known as the Parliament Building or the Bundeshaus is an impressive and beautiful building has two wings and a 64 metre high dome. In front, is found the Parliament Square, which serves as a gathering point for inhabitants and as a market place every weekend.

Try local specialities such as the Bernerplatte (slabs of salt pork, beef tongue, smoked bacon, pork ribs, and mild pork sausage cooked down in broth) or Berner Rösti (shredded potatoes fried with onions, butter, and chunks of bacon).

Bern has one of Europe’s longest shopping promenades, with some 6 km of arcades home to trendy boutiques, jewellery shops, shopping malls and traditional markets.

"We took a train from Venice to Milan for connection to Bern. The ticket indicated that the train will arrive at 1755 in Milan and my connection was 1825. Was very upset that the train arrived at 1830 and we missed the train. They connected us from Milan to Brig and another connection from Brig to Bern which delayed a total of over 2 hours. To make matters worse, we had to seats arranged for these 2 legs and was told that if the train was full, we have to stand. Very unpleasant journey and disappointed with such connection arrangements!! "
