Hidden gem
Escape the crowds at Torcello Island, an hour’s boat ride across the lagoon. Mostly a nature reserve, soak up the views and admire the Byzantine mosaics in its 7th-century cathedral.

20 minutes away is Padova with frequent trains to Venice. In this lively university town, don’t miss the vast piazza Prato della Valle and Renaissance Scrovegni Chapel. Soak up the market atmosphere of Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta, transforming into an al fresco bar by night.
