Lourdes, the Marian city
Lourdes is a small town located in southern France. It is a world renowned place and a pilgrimage site for Christians. In 19th century a small local girl claimed that a lady appeared to her in a Grotto and the later told her that she was the Immaculate Conception. The faithful ones believed she was the Virgin Mary. Since that time, Lourdes has become a place of spirituality surrounded by a beautiful landscape. Indeed, Lourdes can be the ideal starting point to visit the Pyrenees Mountains. The Lourdes railway station is less than 1km from the sanctuaries of Our Lady of Lourdes.
Visit the sanctuaries of Our Lady of Lourdes, to discover where the Virgin Mary first appeared. Don’t miss the Basilica of Rosary and the underground basilica. The sanctuaries are open 24 hours a day, all year long. Masses are celebrated every day from the month of April to October. Don’t miss the torchlight Procession in the evening and drinking the water from La Source spring. It is believed to have healing properties.
From Lourdes, you can take the funicular train to reach the summit of Pic du Ver. The panoramic view is stunning. You can also take an excursion to Cauteret-Pont d’Espagne to see its waterfalls and to Gavarnie, a UNESCO world heritage site. Don’t leave without going to the Pic du Midi de Bigoore Observatory, one of the highest in Europe.
Being a very popular destination, Lourdes has more than 200 restaurants offering all kinds of cuisine. However try the garbure, a local delight. It is a vegetable soup with confit duck. If you want to avoid crowds, head to a back-street tavern for tender Pyrenean lamb with Tarbais haricots.
Lourdes is not what we can call a hot shopping destination. However those who are of Christian faith will de delight by the choice of religious memorabilia and souvenirs. Statuettes of saints, rosaries and candles are everywhere. Flanking the famed Grotto, the Sanctuary starts a run of hundreds of shops selling virgin emblazoned paraphernalia.

- "Catching the connecting train" . 13/11/2015
We almost failed to catch our connecting train from Bordeaux to Paris. Our first train arrived late and we experienced difficulty in finding our connecting train because there are no proper signs / instructions at the station. At the connecting train, we have to hop on the first car we saw, dragging our luggages, because there's no more time figuring out which car we are supposed to board. The train started moving just in time when we boarded.
- "Train stops notification" . 13/11/2015
It was a night train and there's a good change that you will miss your stop if you stay inside your cabin since there's no "silent" alert that would inform the passengers of the next stop. In our case, we just stood near the exit door more than 30min before the scheduled arrival at Lourdes station just to make sure we will not miss our stop.
- "Convenient, Comfortable, Cool" Bobby j. 03/11/2015
We had no difficulty booking the tickets from India. We misplaced one printout but having access to the booking reference we had no difficulty getting a ticket issued at the station. (Only do remember that such tickets need to be endorsed at the stands near the platform). The seats were comfortable. The berths for the night journey were okay. There is food available on the day trains at reasonable prices. Overall definitely recommended.

Train travel is good in Europe if you do not have many luggages on toll. It provides hassle-free travelling and time saving.

- "It was a good experience" Dinusha j. 25/08/2015
We travelled as a family (group of 10) from Paris to Lourdes on Rail Europe. The train was comfortable, clean and was on time. We were pleased with all the amenities. One feedback was that it would be better to upgrade which can support technology / mobile charging devices etc which would be helpful in a long trip.
- "LOurdes to Pars by train" . 23/08/2015
Nice and quiet trip from Lourdes to Paris.
- "Return from Lourdes " Graham p. 21/08/2015
It was a very comfortable trip once we found the correct coach. As we wanted to travel to Charles de Gaulle airport, we had to change trains in Bordeaux St. Jean which was a pity as there was no direct train to CDG from Lourdes.
- "Second Leg" Janine t. 19/08/2015
All on time, all good
- "Visit to Lourdes" Graham p. 18/08/2015
After having done 7 flights within Europe, it was quite a pleasure not have to go through an airport again with all the security searches. I realise that it for one's safety, but the attitude of the security staff needs to be addressed.
