Overview

Dijon, the capital of Burgundy

Dijon, the capital of the Burgundy

Dijon is a town located in Burgundy region and home to more than 150,000 inhabitants. The town is probably most famous for its mustard. With an exceptional architectural heritage, the city of Dijon has 97 hectares of remarkably preserved monuments. Dijon is the gateway to the world renowned Côte de Nuits vineyards. Visitors can choose a guided tour to the vineyards and enjoy a glass of excellent wine in Marsannay-la-Côte, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée or Nuits-Saint-Georges. Don’t forget to look out for the lucky charm of Dijon: the particularly worn-out little Chouette, which fulfills the wish of those who touch it with a left hand stroke.

Dijon is conveniently found on the Rhin-Rhône high speed railway line, making it easily reachable from Paris in approximately 1h35 and from Basel (Switzerland) in 2h10 by train.

About France

Visit the fully preserved historic centre with its Palais des Ducs, its 15th century mansions and beautiful half-timbered houses. Visit the Cathedral Sainte-Bénigne, the Church of Saint-Michel or the gothic Church of Saint-Philibert before heading to the Well of Moses or the Fine Arts Museum. The former capital of the Dukes of Burgundy is nestled within lush greenery. Indeed, Dijon has many gardens and parks that offer you an opportunity to relax and recharge after your visit from cultural monuments and museums.

Try the local specialities: boeuf bourguignon, gougères (cheese puffs) and escargots de Bourgogne accompanied by a kir (wine cocktail).

Do not leave Dijon without buying an earthenware jar of Maille mustard and a pain d’épices (gingerbread).

"TGV is fast, efficient and an easy way to travel. We enjoyed travelling Dijon to Paris Gare Lyon. Luggage can be a bit of a challenge getting off the train, especially on the double decker train. "

Experience on French Train Sys |
"Although we were somewhat apprehensive that the French train system would not live up to expectations we decided to give a try versus traveling by rental car. I must say the experience was a pleasant surprise - everything about the actual experience was top notch. The trains are on time, the personnel staff on the trains were very helpful and the comfort level was quite good.. It is the best I have experienced from traveling all over Europe and the Far East. I would put forth two suggestions: (1) make e-tickets printable on paper sizes that are common to both Europe and the US. A-4 paper in extremely difficult to acquire in the US. (2) Consider different ways to handle large luggage on those routes that are likely to involve tourists. There is luggage space available but it is inadequate when more than two or three people in a couch have large luggage. Overall an excellent experience that I would recommend to others. "

    Travel by Train - it’s great |
"Excellent, efficient way to travel in Europe. Great connections and good value for money. Especially recommended for people travelling with only a 20 inch (European size limit) carry on bag. Large suitcases don't fit well and are a hindrance to everyone. "
